Es el \u00fanico sitio arqueol\u00f3gico en el Per\u00fa, en el que se ven momias antiguas en sus tumbas originales. Este cementerio se us\u00f3 durante un per\u00edodo entre los siglos III y IX, pero los entierros m\u00e1s importantes pertenecen a 600 &#8211; 700. Los cuerpos se conservan notablemente debido al clima seco del desierto, pero los <strong>ritos funerarios<\/strong> tambi\u00e9n contribuyeron. Los cuerpos fueron vestidos con algod\u00f3n bordado y luego pintados con una resina. Se cree que la resina ha prevenido que las bacterias se alimenten de los cuerpos.<br \/>\nEl cementerio fue descubierto en la d\u00e9cada de 1920, pero fue reconocido oficialmente como un monumento arqueol\u00f3gico y protegido solo desde 1997.
