Inkaterra Field station, new Budget lodge 4 D

INKATERRA FIELD STATION, Puerto Maldonado, South Peru Jungle

A place designed to train Inkaterra Explorer Guides and host investigators, volunteers and travelers eager to engage in different projects and experience the amazon rain forest in an intense and scholarly way.

Training Inkaterra Explorer Guides includes becoming ecotourism leaders surviving and excelling in guiding skills, managing ecological projects, and general knowledge of the different Peruvian ecosystems in the three territorial regions.
Our selected training Explorer Guides will guide both groups of students and travelers during their stay in the station.


The Tambopata National Reserve is one of the last easily accessible virgin tropical rain forests in the world. The Reserve, a 274,690-hectare area (678,774-acre), offers a wealth of biodiversity, as well as magnificent natural landscapes. Puerto Maldonado, known as the “Capital of Biodiversity,” is the largest city of the Tambopata region. Overlooking the confluence of the Tambopata and Madre de Dios Rivers, Puerto Maldonado is 400 meters (1,312 feet) above sea level, 650 km (404 miles) from Cusco, and 15 km (9 miles) upriver from the Inkaterra lodge.

ACCESS
Daily commercial flights connect Puerto Maldonado to Lima and Cusco. The lodge is 11 miles (17 km.) from Puerto Maldonado, about 50 minutes by motorized canoe, down the Madre de Dios River.

EXCURSIONS

Inkaterra Guides Field Station offers 10 excursions in Spanish or English.
Our excursions may be classified according to duration: 1⁄4 day (1.5-2 hours), 1⁄2 day (4-6 hours) or 1 day (7 hours or more); as well as by difficulty level: easy (I), moderate (II) or difficult (III), or attractions.

Some excursions offered at Inkaterra Guides Field Station are included in our rates, except those specifying an additional charge or special programming.

DAY 1
TRAIL SYSTEM Walk through Inkaterra Guides Field Station exclusive trails to explore the rainforest ecosystems at the Inkaterra Ecological Reserve, where 540 bird species, 362 ant species (world record) and over 100 mammal species have been registered.
Duration: ¼ day / Difficulty Level: I RECOMMENDED FOR CHILDREN

RIVER NIGHT WATCH Cruise on the Madre de Dios River in search of the wildlife that surfaces during nighttime. Identify the behavior various animals such as capybaras, white caimans and nightjars, as they take advantage of the dark to roam around the Amazonian riverbanks.

DAY 2
INKATERRA CANOPY WALKWAY Winner of the PURE Award in the ‘High Emotion/Low Impact’ category, the Inkaterra Canopy Walkway is a 1129ft system of 2 observation towers, 8 platforms and 7 hanging bridges 100ft above the ground. Designed to perform scientific research on ecosystems inhabiting the rainforest canopy, this attraction contributes to birdwatching and other eco-friendly activities.

RIVER ISLAND A 20-minute boat ride will lead you to the river island near the Inkaterra Guides Field Station, a large sandbank at the shores of the Madre de Dios River. Walk across the island to explore the floodplain that provides the island an ecosystem with a great diversity of birds such as the Amazonian umbrellabird (Cephalopterus ornatus), one of the most sought after species by birdwatchers. DAY 3

WETLANDS
Discover the Amazon’s otherworldly realm of aguajales rainforest swampland, following a -200metre (656 feet) walkway through this diverse ecosystem. Learn how vegetation has adapted to this
atmospheric natural habitat and the exotic species of amphibians, reptiles, snakes, birds and mammals that are drawn here. Duration: ½ day / Difficulty Level: I

BIO-ORCHARD Visit the Inkaterra Association’s orchard, where organic native goods are cultivated. Learn the diverse phases of sustainable horticulture: the preparation of recycled compost; sowing and harvesting vegetables, fine herbs and tropical plants; using natural fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides. Duration: ¼ day / Difficulty Level: I

PALMETUM Explore a 30Ha permanent-plot area for rainforest restoration and conservation, where Inkaterra Asociación has registered up to 19 native palm species. Learn about the rainforest’s survival mechanisms including natural seed dispersion, as well as the characteristics and cultural meaning of trees within the Palmetum, such as the yarina (vegetable ivory) or the walking palm, which moves its roots in search of sunlight. RAINFOREST BY NIGHT Listen carefully to the lively sounds of birds, mammals, insects, reptiles and amphibians in the forest while walking around the Inkaterra Ecological Reserve, interpreting wildlife activity at nightfall. Duration: ¼ day / Difficulty Level: I


DAY 4
Return on motorized canoe to Puerto Maldonado.

Note: Check-out is at 10:00. You can relax in the lodge’s restaurant lounge until your transfer to Puerto Maldonado. Lunch is not included on your departure day but can be arranged
